This print is part of a series entitled “Tegadalit” which translates to “female freedom fighter” in Tigrinya. The series pays homage to the fearless women who fought alongside their male colleagues as equals in the Eritrean liberation war. Eritrean women made the largest composition of female guerilla fighters in any war where 33% of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF) fighters were women. The EPLF’s assault weapon of choice, AK-47, is a common motif throughout the series.

When Eritrean women went off to fight Ethiopia, there was a double front to freedom. There was a double aim: freedom for Eritrea, and liberation for the African woman. It was neighbors and friends and mothers who risked their lives for freedom. It was teachers and clerks and farmers, not an army, that persevered against the internationally-financed Ethiopian army.

The warriors of this series also commemorates and celebrates the various ethnic groups of Eritrea who fought united in their vision for a free Eritrea.
